About ParaTaekwondo

Like Taekwondo, ParaTaekwondo has two disciplines: Poomsae and Kyorugi.

Depending on athlete’s impairment type, athletes might be able to compete in one or both disciplines. Classes competing in Kyorugi will have the “K” prefix. Classes competing in Poomsae will have the “P” prefix. The following sport classes are used for ParaTaekwondo:

  • Visual Impairment - P10
  • Intellectual Disability - P20
  • Neurological Impairments - P30
  • Limb(s) Deficiency or Impaired Passive Range of Movement - K40
  • Wheelchair - P50
  • Deaf - KP60
  • Short Stature - P70

Players need to be classified before participating in World Taekwondo (WT) sanctioned International Para tournaments.

On January 31, 2015, the WT received the historic news that the IPC Governing Board had decided that taekwondo will be included on the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games program. Certain, players under K40 categories are expected to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
