Canadian Results from Last Weekend’s Tournaments

Posted on

Three Canadian athletes competed internationally last weekend, including Skylar Park, Marc-André Bergeron and Anthony Cappello. Anthony Cappello captured a bronze medal at the 2017 IWAS World Games in the K43 M-61kg division. Both Skylar and Marc-André fell short of the second round on Sunday at the Abidjan 2017 World Taekwondo Grand Prix Final.

Marc-André lost to Abdoul Issoufou from Niger, who is currently ranked 2nd in the Olympic M+80kg division.

“I did an honest job. We exchanged a lot of points but Issoufou got me later into the match,” said Marc-André. “I had some good chances but missed two drop kicks.”

Although it’s tough to lose the first match of a competition, Marc-André saw what he needed to do to get better.

“I stayed and watched my division to analyse my potential opponents, to find different ways to win, and to be inspired. I want to be one of those who are regulars to the GP podium eventually,” said Marc-André. “Both finalists, Kyo-don In from Korea and Radik Isaev from Azerbaijan, had me impressed. In was very smart with keeping distance and the timing to attack. Isaev was very proactive and creative with his combinations of techniques.”

“I want to thank Coach Park for his expertise and the support I received from the community. I won’t stop training until I reach my goal.”

Anthony represented Team Canada at the 2017 IWAS World Games and won a bronze medal.

“We are so excited and proud of Anthony’s accomplishment,” said Jamie Dossantos, Taekwondo Canada’s High Performance Advisor. “Anthony has proved himself to be the Olympic hope at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. He managed to get medals at every international competition he participated in 2017, including the World Para-Taekwondo Championships, the Pan Am Para Taekwondo Championships, and the IWAS World Games. It is an incredible achievement and we are happy to see his hard training is paying off.”
