Taekwondo Canada Announces the Passing of Grandmaster Su Hwan Chung

Dear Members,
It is with great sadness that Taekwondo Canada announces the passing of Grandmaster Su Hwan Chung. His passing leaves an emptiness in our hearts, but his spirit will continue to echo in every student who was fortunate enough to learn under his guidance.
Grandmaster Chung’s Taekwondo journey began in Korea in 1966 under Grand Master Han. By 1968, he was crowned Korean National Middleweight Champion, already displaying the strength and perseverance that would define his life. When he began teaching Taekwondo in Edmonton in 1975, he didn’t just build students – he built a community.
For nearly five decades, Grandmaster Chung shaped the face of Taekwondo in Alberta and Canada. As Alberta Team Head Coach from 1982 to 2008, he inspired generations of athletes to reach their highest potential. His leadership extended across every level of the sport as he stood throughout the years as President of the Alberta Taekwondo Association and Taekwondo Canada (2010 – 2014), Vice President of the Pan Am Taekwondo Union, Secretary General of Taekwondo Canada, and Coaching Director and Competition Committee Member for the Alberta Taekwondo Association.
His coaching achievements took him across the world — to Greece, Korea, Egypt, France, Peru, and the United States — guiding Canadian teams to international recognition. Under his leadership, Canada’s women’s team earned 5th place overall at the 1999 World Championships in Edmonton, and in 2002 his team was honored as “Outstanding Team” at the US Open.
But beyond the titles and accolades, Grandmaster Chung will be remembered for his heart. His true joy was always found on the mats with his students at his beloved Tiger Taekwondo. There, he taught not only techniques and discipline, but also humility, respect, and perseverance.
Taekwondo Canada would like to send its sincerest condolences to his family, friends and those in the province of Alberta whom he worked closely with over his many years in the sport of taekwondo.
Sincerely,
The Board of Directors and Staff of Taekwondo Canada
