Cadets Earn Valuable Experience at the Sofia 2022 World Taekwondo Cadet Championships

Posted on

Sofia, Bulgaria (July 31, 2022) – Canada’s Cadet Kyorugi National Team returned to the World stage in Sofia, Bulgaria and left it all in the ring for four days of competition.

World Taekwondo hosted the World Taekwondo Cadet Championships at the Arena Armeec in Sofia, Bulgaria from July 28th to July 31st, 2022. This is the fifth edition of the event and featured over 600 athletes aged between 12 and 14 years from 77 different countries.

After a strong showing at the 2022 Cadet and Junior Pan American Championships, Taekwondo Canada’s National Cadet Kyorugi Team was able to earn two quarterfinal placings, along with many other closely contested matches. This World Championship event marked the next step for these athletes along their pathway as they continue to pursue high performance in the sport. Being able to compete amongst the World’s best, as well as have an opportunity to watch and learn throughout the four days of fighting, provided these athletes with invaluable experience and knowledge to help them continue to improve.

Taekwondo Canada’s High Performance Director Dr. Allan Wrigley commented on the team’s performance and experience, “This was an extremely challenging event for our Cadet athletes. Not only are the World’s best at the event, but fighting lasts for four days. With such a completely new experience we really emphasized a focus on the process, and not the outcomes. We are stressing how important it is to learn and grow from the experiences. These athletes and their coaches now have a greater appreciation for top-level fighting, and have ample information to build into their training programs.”

Taekwondo Canada would like to congratulate and thank all the athletes, coaches and support staff that attended the Sofia 2022 World Taekwondo Cadet Championships!
