Study on Kyorugi Coaching Behavior Seeks Team Canada Coaches

Posted on

Ceili Peterson, an active international Kyorugi athlete and Master’s Candidate in the Depart of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto, is conducting a research study focusing on high-level coaching behavior during competition across various stages of taekwondo athlete development. Ceili is looking for coaches to volunteer to participate in this study, which aims to better understand coaching strategies and decision-making in competitive settings. To be eligible for the study, participants must be current or former Team Canada Kyorugi coaches at the Cadet, Junior, or Senior level.

As part of the research, Ceili will be observing coaches in action during matches at the National Championships and the Canada Open, scheduled for February 2025. Participation would involve minimal disruption to the usual coaching practices. The only adjustment would be the addition of a microphone during the matches. Ceili will also independently be reviewing livestream footage of the matches to analyze coach body language.

Following the competition (ideally within two weeks), participating coaches will be asked to participate in an individual audio-recorded interview, which can be conducted remotely via Zoom, at your Taekwondo club, or at the University of Toronto, depending on your preference. The interview will focus on discussing the video and audio recordings from the competition and will include questions regarding coach specific decisions and actions during the match. For example, Ceili may ask, “What led you to say X to your athlete during the break?” or “What influenced your decision to take action Y?”

Please be assured that all collected data will be collected and maintained solely by Ceili for the purposes of her Master’s research. All information will de-identified to maintain confidentiality throughout the research process and any subsequent dissemination of the findings. Once the data analysis is complete, Ceili will be hosting a seminar for Taekwondo Canada coaches to share the research insights. Additionally, coaches that choose to participate will be provided with a detailed breakdown of their specific coaching behaviors.

If you are interested in participating or have any questions regarding the study, please do not hesitate to contact Ceili at ceili.peterson@mail.utoronto.ca. Taekwondo Canada would greatly appreciate your participation as this is a tremendous opportunity to contribute valuable insights to coaching research and the Canadian taekwondo community.
