Suspension Update – Greg Bauer

Posted on

On December 17, 2023, Taekwondo Canada suspended the membership of Greg Bauer, a taekwondo coach with Five Rings Taekwondo in Waterloo, Ontario. The suspension was deemed necessary after Bauer was charged with assault, sexual assault, and sexual exploitation of a minor female by the Waterloo Regional Police Service on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

On July 21, 2026, Bauer entered a guilty plea and was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor contrary to s. 271 of the Criminal Code. Taekwondo Canada understands that the minor in question was an athlete at Bauer’s club at the time the abuse occurred.

On August 7, 2026, Bauer filed a Notice of Appeal alleging that:

    1. The verdict should be set aside on the ground that it is unreasonable or cannot be
      supported by the evidence;
    2. The judgment of the trial court should be set aside on the ground of a wrong decision
      on a question of law;
    3. The conduct of the trial resulted in a miscarriage of justice;
    4. The trial judge erred in principle in a manner that had an impact on the sentence;
    5. The sentence is manifestly unfit; and
    6. Such further and other grounds as counsel may advise and this Honourable Court may
      permit.
Bauer’s suspension will continue until the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, including appeals. In the meantime, while suspended, Bauer is prohibited from attending or otherwise engaging in any Taekwondo Canada affiliated competition or event, including those run or organized by Taekwondo Ontario or any of its member clubs. His club remains not in good standing and he is not allowed to conduct any business through Taekwondo Canada.
Upon completion of the criminal proceedings, the terms of Bauer’s suspension will be revisited and a lifetime ban from Taekwondo Canada may be considered at that time.
