Taekwondo Canada today is announcing the retirement of Dr. Terry DeFreitas as Chief Medical Advisor with the organization.

DeFreitas first volunteered at a Taekwondo Canada national event in 1998, assisting the local medical team. Her first international event with the organization was Chief Medical Advisor as part of the host World Taekwondo Championships in Edmonton in 1999. In 2000, Dr. Terry first travelled  with Team Canada as part of the National Junior team.

During her career with Taekwondo Canada, DeFreitas has cared for athletes over several years at world championships, and Pan American games. She was selected as core medical team for the Beijing 2008 and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games.

During her time as Chief medical advisor with Taekwondo Canada, DeFreitas developed head injury care processes from on field to follow up. She introduced many therapists, medical students and physicians to the sideline medical coverage for taekwondo.

“I have enjoyed twenty-six years of taking care of the taekwondo community. Our athletes are dedicated, brave, resilient and respectful. Our competitors are model athletes. Over the years I have had the pleasure of working with many excellent coaches, referees, physician’s therapists and chiropractors all willing to volunteer their time in order to ensure the safety of this excellent martial art. I have been very lucky to be part of this martial art and this team Thank you all”

Taekwondo Canada Executive Director Dave Harris said of the announcement, “we cannot overstate the commitment and passion that Dr. Terry brought to that athletes with Taekwondo Canada.” “In 26 years with the organization, Dr. Terry ensured that the health and safety of the athletes was paramount in all aspects of her duties.
